Homemade Finger Paint

While I was babysitting this week, we made homemade finger paint and it was a big hit. Here's the recipe:

1/2 cup cornstarch
3 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups cold water
food coloring

In a medium sauce pan, mix all the ingredients together. Cook over low heat 5-10 minutes, stirring constantly. It will begin making little hard balls, and then soon after the whole mixture will turn more solid. Remove from heat, and allow to cool. Separate into containers and color as desired.

Women's Conference Recap

Yesterday I had a "sharing station" at Women's Conference. I wasn't sure what the response would be, but people seemed to really like all the new project ideas. Welcome Women's Conference readers! I thought it would be helpful to show each project that was displayed and where the tutuorial is available. If you have any questions, or would like to contact me, please leave a comment or email me at somebrightideas@gmail.com.

When I was little, my mom had a birthday banner that she put up for all our birthdays. I decided to create one for my little family out of fabric. We love it! The pattern is available on Etsy. If you're not the sewing type, the finished banner is also available.

Tool belt tutorial is available on Make it and Love it

The tutorial for this soft fabric jingle ball is available here.

These yarn balls are great for babies! They are also great for classrooms. The tutorial is found here on Some Bright Ideas.

I made these cute finger puppets yesterday before Women's Conference. I think they're adorable. Amy, from The Idea room has the short tutorial. I always like to find projects with felt because I have so much left from the playhouse below!

I also made these bean bags a few hours before Women's Conference. I didn't have any pattern or tutorial, but I cut my fabric about 4"x5", sewed around the edges leaving an 2" opening, turned, stuffed and sewed it closed. I probably sould have handstitched the opening closed to make it look better, but I think they're fine the way they are. After all, they're just bean bags, right?

Here's another project without a tutorial. Mr. Potato Head is made all of felt, and stuffed with a little batting. The pieces velcro on and he has a large pocket in the back to hold everything. I used a lot of hot glue to put the eyes, hat and mouth pieces together. Let me know if you have any questions!

These crayon rolls are so great and so easy to make! The tutorial is available here.

I love using these felt bags instead of bulky pumpkins or easter baskets. They're so easy to make too! Here are the instructions.

There isn't a full tutorial for this alphabet, but if anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll type it up. I used the font Berlin Sans, I think about 200 point font. I then traced the letters onto heavy heat and bond (available at craft stores), then ironed them onto different fabrics. Then I ironed them all onto black felt. Finally attach magnets to the back and you're done!

This advent calendar is one of my all time favorite projects. I looked and looked for a advent calendar that was a nativity, but couldn't find one I liked. Finally, with the help of my very talented mother-in-law, we came up with this magnet board advent calendar. It is perfect! Right now, I am selling finished advent calendars here. Are you interested in the pattern? Please email me at somebrightideas@gmail.com! I'd love to see how much interest there is. I have been brainstorming different layouts to make the advent calendar a little more affordable as well. Again, let me know if this is something you'd be interested in.

These I-spy bags are great for keeping kids quiet at church. You can use your scrap fabric and clean out your junk drawer to fill it! The tutorial is found here.

If you're feeling ambitious, make a felt playhouse! My kids absolutely love this playhouse! The tutorial is available on Homemade by Jill.

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Today I had a "sharing station" booth at Women's Conference. It turned out really cute. There was a lot of interest in the advent calendar and the birthday banner. The information for those are listed below. Birthday banner pattern is available on etsy for $4. Finished banners are also available on etsy for $37.
The advent calendar is only available as a finished product right now. You can find it here. If you are interested in the pattern, please email me at somebrightideas@gmail.com.

Things to buy at the dollar store

I don't shop at the dollar store that often, but there are a few things that you just can't get cheaper anywhere else.

1. Kids craft supplies. I paid around a dollar for 10 googly eyes at Joann. I should have gone to the dollar store where you can pick up a large bag of different sized eyes for $1.

2. Pregnancy tests. Many people don't know that the dollar store has pregnancy tests, and they work! Not an announcement, if you're curious.
What do you buy at the dollar store? I'd love to hear suggestions.

i-spy bags

Thanks, Jen for your truck picture!
These I spy bags have been around for a long time, but in case you want to make one, I thought I'd do a short tutorial.

Cut two large square pieces. Mine are about 7x7. Cut out any other shape you may want on top. Get creative! I made this one with Sharp helping, so we just went very basic. Instead of making a square background, try doing a star or some other interesting shape that might entertain for a bit longer. Sew shapes to your background square. Cut out a window. Cut out a piece of clear vinyl and place over window (on the backside. Sew in place. I sewed along the same lines as I did when sewing the fish on. Sew front and back pieces together, leaving a small space to fit your poly fill beads (found at crafts stores) and trinkets. Fill. Do not over stuff your bag or it will be hard to sew closed and it will be hard for your child to move the beads around while searching. Sew opening closed.

Treat Bags

These cute little bags make fun alternative to the bulky Easter basket and Halloween bucket. They are a fun project to make with kids.

  1. Cut 2 pieces of felt 8.5"x9.5"
  2. Trace your bag embellishments onto fusible web. Make sure you trace them backwards!
  3. Iron fusible web to fabric according to package instructions.
  4. Peel off paper from embellishments and place on one piece of felt. Leave about 2 1/4" space at the bottom of your felt piece for the bottom of the bag. Iron in place.
  5. Decorate and stitch as desired.
  6. Place right sides together and sew around the sides and bottom of the bag.
  7. To make a box bottom bag, center a side seam on top of the bottom seam, forming a triangle.
  8. Measure in 1 1/2" from the point of the triangle and mark a line perpendicular to your seam. Sew along the line. Repeat on the other side.
  9. Cut triangle, leaving 1/4" seam.
  10. Cut two pieces of ribbon for handles, about 15" each.
  11. Sew ribbon along the top edge, about 1" from each side.

Other variation ideas: parade bag, church bag, etc.
